Gotta Have It!
This book is a revelation! I'm a long-time rock'n'roll fan and record collector but here's much more to the "Fortune Records story" than I'd ever imagined... and it's all here, along with tons of info, interviews, photos and enough label reproductions to keep you drooling for days. Expensive, yes, and well worth it.
Lots of research has gone into this work and done very well. I have two books out on Michigan music and reading this book, it has gone into great detail. www.fredreif.com
A GRAPHIC AND HISTORICAL DELIGHT
I have just newly received this book, have not actually read it yet so therefore my 5-star rating does not apply to the written content. It applies to the product as a whole: obviously, a tremendous labor of love. It is full of illustrated energy; virtually every page has a photo or illustration. Several tons of research must have gone into this. It is an astounding tribute to Fortune Records and an inspiration.
When I received this and saw Bill Randle, the famous Cleveland DJ, when I first opened it, my day was made. I was born in 1942 in Cleveland and grew up in Painesville and in Euclid where I had the good luck to hear him and Mad Daddy. This added some luster and happiness to my drab teenage years. Thanks so much for this labor of love which I became aware of due to the fine profile of Miriam Linna in the NEW YORKER which my wife pointed out.
Have not cracked open the book yet but my friend John told me it's the best. Mike has been on my radar for a long time. Watching him play on Franklin Ave. one night by the stage in a big easy chair a tipsy young babe fell in my lap. The band almost fell off the stage laughing. FORTUNATE!
BEST BOOK EVER PUBLISHED ABOUT A RECORD LABEL
Best book ever published about a record label has extensive facts & information along with a treasure trove of color label photographs as well as historical photographs and period advertising reprints. Absolutely a MUST for any serious record aficionado/historian. Obviously a labor of love
Must do reading
GREAT. Had to be hundreds of hours of research. Very interesting and should be in all 50's record collectors shelf.
FORTUNE RECORDS ~ A UNIQUE INDY LABEL
This is probably one of the best ever books about 20th Century American Music. Fortune Records which recorded Blues / R&B / Rockabilly / Doo-Wop / Hillbilly / Soul from 1946 up into The Nineties, was beholden to no one. Husband & Wife team Jack & Devora Brown released some of the most wonderful 45s ever recorded. This lavishly illustrated book is a labour of love for the late Billy Miller with assistance from Michael Hurtt. Miraculously despite Miller's death in 2016, Miriam Linna's Kicks Books has finally published this essential piece of musical history. Don't miss it!!!!!
