HALBSTARK BABY-BABY HALBSTARK! Teenage Street Gangs In Switzerland 1962-1972 Through the Eyes Of Dieter "Igel" Ehrlich (ISBN 9781940157191)   250 page hardcover, sturdy Smyth binding, glossy stock! Years in the making - it's here at last. This gorgeous book features the scrapbook images of teenage gang leader Dieter "Igel" Ehrlich, featuring his delinquent gangs, boozing in their hang-outs and bars, and out in the street in full regalia - chains, jackets, pompadoured hair, beat up boots and wild fashion flare to boot. Included is a first time history of the noxious Swiss gangs and a detailed listing of the gangs from cities across the country - the Red Devils, the Express Killers, the Black Star Gang, Vampirs, Venom, the Lions, the Pumas, Torpedo gang and loads more - all known gangs are accounted for here. Introduction by Igel Ehrlich and Lukas Müller. Paperbound edition is available on Amazon.

(*the gallery exhibition July 11-12-13...)

Hey, let's go to the Halbstark show at FROSCH&CO, 34 East Broadway NYC, in the heart of the gallery district! Admission is free to this three day event. Come on by, noon til 6, any day or every day - we've got the blow-ups of twenty-six images plus piped in Halbstark-era rock n' roll plus a relentless slide show of hundreds of images from the archive that we raked through to pull a gallery's worth of boss images. Bring your cabbage - our last copies of the hardcover book are available for purchase (softbound edition is at Amazon), plus of course we have Vampir and Black Devil Perfumes, our exclusive in-house fragrances, and most amazingly, the first ever giclee enlargements from the book - printed by Lys Guillorn at Still River Editions and professionally matted in Italian frames and numbered, with limited lifetime runs of 10. Venmo is recommended, pick up of photographs is at the end of the exhibit July 13.  We can also arrange delivery. Also on  Saturday July 13, Miriam will chat with boss man Bruce Hackney, curator and U.S. manager for the Karlheinz Weinberger Stiftung, about the remarkable friendship between KHW and a teenage tough cat named Dieter "Igel" Ehrlich, and how this unusual friendship brought a mild mannered photographer into a rowdy teenage mix. Weinberger's images are classic, but the subjects were never credited... until now, with Igel's backstory and insider images of life in Swiss youth gangs. This has been an amazing trip into the wilds of Swiss gangs and we'd love to haze you all in! Meet you there!

press release

Switzerland. The land of cheese, chocolate, watches… and a history of rebellious street gangs! Discover another side of Switzerland and learn more about Swiss youth subcultures of the 1960s with HALBSTARK BABY-BABY HALBSTARK!, an exhibition organized by the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York in collaboration with Miriam Linna, former drummer of The Cramps and founder of Norton Records and Kicks Books.

The exhibition features photographs from the book HALBSTARK BABY-BABY HALBSTARK!, recently published by Linna’s Kicks Books and will be on view from July 11-13, 2024 at FROSCH&CO gallery in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Discover the raw essence of Swiss youth culture through the evocative photographs of former gang member Dieter “Igel” Ehrlich. Books and prints will be available for purchase.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a conversation between Miriam Linna and Bruce Hackney (curator and U.S. manager for the Karlheinz Weinberger Stiftung) on Saturday, July 13 at 3pm at FROSCH&CO gallery.
